Two government primary schools will merge next year due to the continuing decline in Hong Kong’s student population, the Education Bureau announced on Tuesday.
In a statement, the bureau said the North Point Government Primary School (Cloud View Road) in Wan Chai will not take in primary one students from the 2024/2025 academic year
Officials added that the Wan Chai school will transfer dozens of junior primary students to the North Point Government Primary School in Quarry Bay, while more than 100 senior primary students will complete their education at the school’s original premises until its planned closure in 2027.
"It (the merger) will alleviate the situation of excessive supply of school places in Wan Chai District," a government spokesperson said, adding that the merger makes full sense because the two schools share the same origin and have similar backgrounds.
“It will integrate resources and leverage the advantages of the two schools to provide students with a better learning environment and richer learning experience so as to meet students' diverse learning and development needs.”
The bureau also said teaching staff hired under civil service terms could be transferred to other government schools.
The government said it will continue to closely monitor the changes in the local student population and maintain close communication with the sector.
