A council member of the China Soong Ching Ling Foundation said on Thursday that an exhibition honouring the "mother of modern China" would educate young people about her contributions to the country as well as Hong Kong history.

The Soong Ching-ling exhibition, themed "Serving Her Country and People Heart and Soul", will feature never-before-seen artefacts about the life of the late Honorary President of China.

Speaking on RTHK's Backchat programme, Herman Hu, a local deputy to the National People's Congress and an organiser of the exhibition, said Madame Soong's personal collections, photos and news clippings will be on display.

"During the war, she mobilised a lot of women to fight for China, especially when she was in Hong Kong during World War II, to fight for the country, and also to support the army," he said.

Madame Soong later became one of the founders of the People's Republic of China.

"Afterwards, she helped the country draft a lot of legislations that protect women in the country and the rights of children in the country," Hu added.

"She also demonstrated herself that women can be very diligent in contributing to the development of the country."

He said he hopes people will learn about her role in enhancing welfare for Chinese women and children, and promoting friendship between China and the rest of the world.

The exhibition will take place from September 15 to October 14 at Hong Kong Central Library.
