The Hong Kong Observatory said it will consider issuing the No. 9 storm signal between 6pm and 8pm on Friday night.

The forecaster said according to the present forecast track, Super Typhoon Saola will be closest to the SAR from Friday night to Saturday morning, skirting within about 50 kilometres south of the territory.

"Saola continues to edge closer to Hong Kong as a Super Typhoon. Gale force winds are prevailing over offshore areas and on high ground. Winds over parts of high ground reached storm force. Heavy squally showers associated with Saola are affecting the territory," it said.

"The Observatory will consider issuing the Increasing Gale or Storm Signal No.9 between 6pm and 8pm tonight."

The MTR Corporation said its service on open sections of the railway will be suspended immediately in the event of a higher signal being issued. Limited services will be provided on its underground sections.
