Chief Executive John Lee and senior government officials on Sunday joined a ceremony to commemorate the victory of the Chinese people's war of resistance against Japanese aggression.

On social media, Lee offered his deepest condolences over the martyrs and compatriots who died and said he would forever remember the efforts that the Chinese people made.

Members of the Executive Council, legislators, representatives of war veteran groups and youth organisations also attended the ceremony at Hong Kong City Hall Memorial Garden.

Guests observed a moment of silence and there was a rifle volley by the police rifle squad.

The ceremony has been held since 2014 when the National People's Congress designated September 3 as Victory Day.
