The observatory says it could issue a Standby Signal No 1 on Monday morning as another typhoon heads towards China.
The last No 1 signal only went down on Saturday night, after Super Typhoon Saola left town.
Now the threat is coming from Severe Typhoon Haikui which was expected to move across the southern part of Taiwan on Sunday before entering the Taiwan Strait on Monday.
The storm was then predicted to move towards the coast of eastern Guangdong or southern Fujian, the observatory said, adding that Haikui's movement remained uncertain.
"The observatory will consider issuing the Standby Signal No 1 tomorrow morning. Members of the public please take note of the latest weather forecast," a notice said.
