Macau authorities said on Monday that they are expanding a ban on imports of single-use plastic tableware.
Starting in January, businesses in the SAR will no longer be able to bring in non-degradable styrofoam trays, plastic cups and plates.
But the authorities have not specified when firms will have to use up all the products they have in stock.
Macau has forbidden the importation of non-degradable plastic cutlery since the start of the year.
Hong Kong plans to impose a ban on single-use plastics as early as the fourth quarter of 2023.
Still, Leanne Tam, a campaigner with Greenpeace, said the local government can learn from Macau.
"You can see that Macau moves much faster than us. When they announced the bill, the preparation is actually not that long. The Hong Kong government always claims it needs to have a longer preparation time... You can see that in Macau, if you have a clear timeline, the public and the commercial sector will follow," she said.
