Chief Executive John Lee announced on Tuesday that a fireworks display will be held once again to mark National Day next month – the first time in five years.

The October 1 display over Victoria Harbour was first suspended in 2019 because of the social unrest. It was also cancelled in the subsequent years due to the Covid pandemic.

Speaking ahead of the weekly Executive Council meeting, Lee said the government is also coming up with a plan to spice up Hong Kong’s nightlife.

"There will be extensive participation. For example, many shopping malls will be extending their operating hours and providing various concessions and coupons so as to bring vibrancy to our night market or night economy," he said.

The CE said more details will be unveiled next week.
