Chief Secretary Eric Chan on Tuesday welcomed Beijing’s plans to boost the development of a joint innovation and technological cooperation zone in Hong Kong and Shenzhen.

The measures outlined by the State Council for the Shenzhen side of the Hetao Shenzhen-Hong Kong Science and Technology Innovation Co-operation Zone include establishing a mechanism to support the scientific and technological innovation cooperation between the two sides, and rebuilding the Huanggang Control Point to facilitate effective and efficient customs clearance procedures.

Speaking at a press conference organised by the State Council Information Office, Chan thanked mainland authorities for their support.

“The series of measures outlined in the plan for the Shenzhen park, including how to synergise with Hong Kong in promoting international technology and innovation, injects new impetus into the collaboration between Hong Kong and Shenzhen and propels it to new heights,” he said.

“The HKSAR will continue its active collaboration with Shenzhen and proactive integration into the overall development of the country, promoting the advantages of the Co-operation Zone under the 'one zone, two parks' principle underpinned by the 'one country, two systems' principle.”

The Chief Secretary added that planning for the first phase of the Hong Kong side of the park is complete, and three of the buildings will be built from the end of next year.
