Police on Wednesday said they are investigating a suspected murder-suicide case in Tai Po, in which a 61-year-old man jumped off a building after allegedly killing his niece following a row over money.

Officers were called to Hang Wo House in Tai Wo Estate at around 9.44am where they found the man's body on the ground-floor platform.

They later found a 48-year-old woman dead in the flat, from which the man fell, with multiple wounds on her back and neck.

Matthew Chan, an assistant district commander, said police had confirmed that the man was the woman’s uncle.

"We believe that the motive behind this attack was a financial dispute, specifically related to a disagreement over ownership of the property. The man went to the flat the night before and it is suspected that he had a conflict with the woman,” Chan said.

"After killing her, he committed suicide out of fear of punishment," he added.

Officers believe that the man first tried to commit suicide inside the apartment by burning charcoal.
