The government said on Sunday that there shouldn't be a problem for people to return to work and go to school on Monday morning, as Hong Kong has largely returned to normality after the city was pounded by record rainfall last week.

But Chief Secretary Eric Chan said officials will remain on high alert as the Observatory is expecting more rain to come.

"We will arrange and complete relevant works in the aftermath, so that the society can fully return to normal operations as soon as possible," he told a press conference.

The Education Bureau said even though most schools will resume face-to-face classes on Monday, ten schools won’t be able to reopen as their campuses have been damaged by the downpour.

Meanwhile, development minister Bernadette Linn said officials have received 60 reports of flooding and 75 incidents of landslides in the past few days. She noted that 21 of the landslide cases still require handling.

Motorists and commuters have also been asked to exercise caution as some roads will remain partially closed.

Home affairs chief Alice Mak, for her part, said officials will speed up the vetting of emergency funding applications from residents and merchants who suffered losses because of the severe storm.

“We understand the concerns of the affected villagers and residents, so various bureaus will deploy additional manpower to help the affected residents and villagers to apply for these relief funds and speed up their processing,” she said.
