Queen Elizabeth Hospital on Saturday announced the death of a 60-year-old woman who had been admitted to a special observation ward because of a hand injury and "mental confusion".
The hospital said the patient intended to harm herself so "healthcare staff applied [a] safety vest and put on limb-holder straps.
It said the patient was being closely monitored and was last seen by healthcare staff at about 3 am on Saturday in a stable and calm condition.
However, half an hour later, a staff member found her with a bandage coiled around her neck.
Staff attempted to resuscitate the patient, but she was certified dead at around 4.30 am.
It said it had notified the police, and the case has been referred to the coroner.
It expressed its condolences to the family.
