Rising squash star Simmi Chan on Thursday came up just short in her bid to strike gold in the Asian Games. Still, the silver medal she won in women's singles on Day 12 added to the SAR's record tally.

Chan came tantalisingly close to a gold medal, pushing her Malaysian opponent Sivasangari Subramaniam to the very end in the women's singles final.

After splitting the first four games, it all came down to an exciting finale.

Chan came up just short, losing the fifth and final game 12-10 and settled for a silver medal.

The 21-year-old said after the match she's a bit disappointed, but that she'll learn from experience and strive for even better results in future.

In karate, Grace Lau won the bronze medal in the women's individual Kata event.

Lau scored 43.40 points performing the Tomari Bassai form, nearly three points ahead of her opponent Nguyen Thi Phuong of Vietnam.

She told HOY TV she's very familiar with this form, but she has never performed it in a medal match.

"I've been practicing this form a lot more lately. Though I have a lot of other routines under my belt, I wanted to choose this one because I think it would be more appealing to the audience," she said.

Lau won bronze in the same event in Jakarta in 2018.

On the men's side, Chris Cheng missed out on the podium after he was defeated by South Korea's Park Heejun in the men's individual Kata event.

In bridge, the Hong Kong team took a 129-91 lead after the first three matches against India in the final, with three more matches to go on Friday.

In badminton, the men's, women's and mixed doubles teams all bowed out in the quarterfinals.

On the men's side, Law Cheuk-him and Yeung Shing-choi lost both games to their South Korean opponents, Choi Solgyu and Kim Wonho.

The women's pair of Yeung Nga-ting and Yeung Pui-lam were beaten 2-1 by Kim Soyeong and Kong Heeyong, also of South Korea.

And the mixed doubles pair of Jordan Tang and Tse Ying-suet, who reached the semifinals of the Tokyo Olympics, were defeated 2-0 by Yuta Watanabe and Arisa Higashino of Japan.

After 12 days of competition, China continue to lead the way with more than 330 medals, followed by Japan and South Korea.

Hong Kong are now 12th in the standings – with seven golds, 16 silvers, and 29 bronzes – for a total of 52 medals.
