The Hong Kong men's bridge team on Friday cruised to a gold medal at the Asian Games, the eighth for the SAR in Hangzhou.

The gold tally for team Hong Kong in the tournament now equals that achieved at the Guangzhou Games in 2010.

Hong Kong's bridge players Lai Wai-kit, Mak Kwok-fai, Ho Wai-lam, Gordon Ho, Alan Sze and Abby Chiu beat India 229.1-152 in the final.

In six sessions in the title round, the SAR team won all but one of them.

Mak told HOY TV that he's glad the team took a step forward at this year's Games, having won silver in Jakarta in 2018.

"Lai and I are partners and we've waited for this gold for five years. For our team we've prepared for this Asian Games for more than three years. I'm so excited, I don't know how to describe it," he said.

He added that he hopes the medal will be an encouragement for bridge players in Hong Kong in the longer run, saying he's turned professional and hopes more people will do the same.

In the inaugural breakdancing event at the Asian Games, Hong Kong's Sze Ka-yam, also known as B-Boy C Plus – made it to the men's group stages but wasn't able to advance further.

He was unable to win a round in his dance-off battles against athletes from Japan and Chinese Taipei.

The SAR's B-Boy Think Tsang Tsz-wa was ranked 18th in the qualifying round and missed the cut of 16 dancers.

In the women's event, Wong Chiu-wai, known as Lady Banan, and Lady Little Chan Ka-yi, both made the last 16 group stage.

But they didn't win a battle against their opponents from Chinese Taipei, Vietnam, Japan and South Korea.

Meanwhile, Hong Kong equestrian riders Jacqueline Lai and Patrick Lam finished 15th and 23rd respectively in individual jumping. That means the team ended their trip to Hangzhou with a silver and a bronze.

And the men's football team are preparing to go for bronze in a showdown against Uzbekistan. The Hongkongers will look to bounce back from 1-0 and 2-1 defeats against the Uzbeks in the group stage.

The match will kick off at 4pm on Saturday.
