The Observatory on Saturday said Typhoon Koinu had intensified slightly, with a more compact circulation, as it nears Hong Kong. It said the combined effect of Koinu and the northeast monsoon meant local winds were expected to strengthen further later on Saturday to Sunday with gales possible over parts of the territory particularly the south.
But it also said the gale winds were still some distance from Hong Kong and that the Strong Wind Signal No. 3 would remain in force at least until 8 am on Saturday, when a higher signal may be considered.
As at around 4 am, the Observatory said maximum sustained winds recorded at Tate's Cairn, Sha Chau and Waglan Island were 53, 48 and 46 kilometres per hour with maximum gusts exceeding 66, 56 and 51 kilometres per hour respectively.
