The Observatory on Saturday said Typhoon Koinu had slowed down slightly, after taking a more south-westerly track in the early hours of Saturday. It said local winds were strengthening gradually, with strong winds over parts of the territory.

The Observatory said, as Koinu’s circulation was rather compact, its gale winds would stay at some distance from Hong Kong and that the chance of gale winds prevailing over the territory on Saturday was low. It said the Strong Wind Signal No. 3 would remain in force for most of Saturday.

However, it said, under the combined effect of Koinu and the north-east monsoon, local winds would strengthen further on Sunday and it would then assess the need for a higher signal.

The Education Bureau said that, as the No.3 signal was in force, classes of kindergartens, schools for children with physical disability, and schools for children with intellectual disability were suspended.

The Social Welfare Department advised members of the public not to take their children or family members to child care centres, centres providing after school care programmes, elderly services centres, or day rehabilitation units.
