Hong Kong athletes have performed remarkably well in the latest edition of the Asian Games, Chief Executive John Lee said, with the SAR team bringing home a record-breaking 53 medals.

The Hangzhou Games closed on Sunday, with Hong Kong ranked 12th on the overall medal tally, with eight golds, 16 silvers and 29 bronzes.

On the last day of the tournament, SAR athletes fought hard in karate and artistic swimming events but were unable to add to the medal count.

In the women's kumite under-50 kilo event, Karate athlete Tsang Yee-ting missed out on bronze after losing to Japan's Miho Miyahara.

Tsang was in tears after the event, saying she had given the competition all she had, and that winning no medals in her last Asian Games had left her with regrets.

Chris Cheng, Howard Hung, and Tang Yu-hin, meanwhile, scored 40.6 at the bronze medal match in the men's team kata event – just 1.2 points short of Iraq's score of 41.8.

Cheng said after the event that while he felt disappointed about narrowing missing a medal, he hoped people had enjoyed his team’s performance.

In artistic swimming, the SAR team finished 6th while China won gold.

In a statement, Chief Executive John Lee said the Hong Kong team has achieved remarkable results at the Games and has made the city very proud.

He said he’s looking forward to personally congratulating the athletes at a welcome ceremony on Saturday.

“Hong Kong athletes have trained hard for many years and have shown great dedication in their competitions and demonstrated professional sportsmanship. I believe that all Hong Kong citizens, including myself, are incredibly proud of our athletes,” he said in a statement.

Sports minister Kevin Yeung also expressed his gratitude to the SAR team.
