The observatory said on Sunday that it may issue a higher warning signal if the hurricane winds of typhoon Koinu edged even closer to Hong Kong.

The No.8 Gale or Storm Signal currently remains in force.

At 5pm, Typhoon Koinu was centred about 70 kilometres south of Hong Kong Observatory and is forecast to move northwest or west-northwest slowly edging closer to the Pearl River Estuary.

According to the present forecast track, it said Koinu will be closest to Hong Kong before midnight, skirting about 70 kilometres south of the observatory.

"Koinu is a mature typhoon with its eyewall edging closer to the seas south of the territory. Gale winds are already prevailing in many places in the southern part of Hong Kong and winds may strengthen further. If the hurricane winds of Koinu edge further closer to Hong Kong, the observatory may need to issue higher tropical cyclone warning signals," the forecaster said.

It added that the intense rainbands associated with Koinu are affecting Hong Kong, with heavy squally showers expected today and on Monday.

As of 4.40pm, authorities said they have received seven reports of fallen trees.

The Drainage Services Department, for its part, said it has not received any reports of flooding so far.

"During extreme weather conditions, heavy downpours may lead to a sudden rise in river levels. In order to ensure their safety, citizens should stay away from rivers. In particular, those who live close to rivers should pay close attention to any change in the weather and consider evacuating when necessary," the department's technical secretary, Ronald Lai, said.
