The first day of the Asian Para Games concluded on Monday in Hangzhou, with the SAR team bringing home five medals.
Ng Cheuk-yan snatched bronze in the women's 100 metre backstroke S-6, marking the first medal for the Hong Kong squad.
The 13-year-old finished third in a time of one minute 33.37 seconds, behind the Chinese pair, Jiang Yuyan and Zhu Ji, who took home gold and silver respectively.
After the race, Ng said she was honoured to win the first medal for the Hong Kong team – and hoped to do even better in future competitions.
"I am very excited. I never thought I'd be the first to win a medal for the Hong Kong team," she said.
"I would like to thank my coach and my family for their support and encouragement, which motivated me to achieve better results."
Elsewhere, Alison Yu won bronze in the women's foil individual category A in wheelchair fencing. The 39-year-old, who is competing in her fourth Asian Para Games and has won medals at each of the previous editions, was beaten 15-4 by China's Gu Haiyan in the semi-finals. She automatically won the bronze medal as there was no bronze medal match in the competition.
Later in the night, all eyes were on swimming where Hong Kong not only secured its first gold medal, but also took home a one-two-three in the 200 metres S14 freestyle event.
Tang Wai-lok won the event and broke the Asian Games record he set in the heats with a time of 1:56.76 to secure the gold, almost a second ahead of teammate Cheung Tsun-lok, who finished second. The bronze went to Wong Hon-yin.
China’s Xie Maosan won the first gold of the day in the women's canoe KL1 event.
