Chief Executive John Lee on Saturday said problems with subdivided housing can't be solved overnight, adding that officials will take a gradual approach.

In his Policy Address on Wednesday, Lee said a task force would be set up to tackle subdivided flats and their poor living conditions, although no time-frame was given to phase them out.

Speaking to reporters after a radio programme, Lee said authorities would prioritise the handling of subdivided units with fire safety risks.

"We need to differentiate those we should tackle, those we should improve, and those that we should not allow," he said.

The CE said he would consult different stakeholders on how to deal with the long-standing housing problem that affects more than 200,000 people.

"In future, I believe that any suggestions made will be thoroughly discussed by residents, society, and the Legislative Council, so I think it is important to build a consensus," he told an RTHK programme.
