Health Secretary Lo Chung-mau on Thursday said law enforcement officers will be brought in if any suspected criminal activity is found during an investigation into the quality of construction materials used in a redevelopment project at Kwong Wah Hospital.

The Hospital Authority earlier announced that a probe was underway following media reports that corners may have been cut involving the coating materials of cable trunking used to protect electrical wires at the hospital.

After appearing on a radio programme, Lo said the structural safety of the building is not at risk, and there's no danger to patients or staff.

He said the coating materials are only to prevent rust and enhance the durability of the cable trunking.

But the minister also suggested that the alleged corner-cutting could amount to criminal behaviour.

"If it's found that the contractor has violated the terms of the contract, appropriate action will be taken in accordance with the contractual agreement," he said.

"If the incident involves criminal or fraudulent activity, we will report it to law enforcement authorities for further action."
