Gay Games Hong Kong co-chair Lisa Lam on Friday said it is inevitable that some people will express opposition to the event, because Hong Kong is a pluralistic society.

Some people, including a number of lawmakers, had urged the government to stop the Games from taking place, saying the organisers would use the event to call for gay rights.

On a radio programme, Lam stressed that the Games are not for promoting same-sex marriage or LGBT movements.

"We just want to organise a diverse sports and cultural event to allow everyone to join happily. We want to show the world Hong Kong's vitality after the pandemic," she said.

"We understand that there are different [opposing] voices and opinions because Hong Kong is a plural society... but we are not a political organisation and we don't have any political purpose."

Meanwhile, the DAB said it was worried the Games will damage the institution of marriage and core "family values".

“We have received a lot of feedback from residents that by hosting this Gay Games, it would affect the perception on the traditional family values and how we are going to uphold the traditional marriage between a man and a woman. And that will actually shake the core values of our city,” said DAB lawmaker Holden Chow.

He urged the government to step up education for Hongkongers so that traditional values can be upheld.
