Chief Executive John Lee on Sunday said Hong Kong will strengthen its cooperation with Shanghai, saying the two cities have various similarities in areas like the economy and trade, technology and education.
Lee led a delegation of officials, business leaders and firms to the China International Import Expo in Shanghai.
Wrapping up his two-day visit, the chief executive noted that it is the first time since the Expo’s inception in 2018 that Hong Kong’s leader could make two speeches at two separate forums at the expo.
He also noted a Hong Kong-themed forum was held for the first time during the Expo which he described as the nation’s “value and support” for the SAR.
“This is precisely the role that Hong Kong plays under the principle of 'One Country, Two Systems' as a bridge connecting the mainland and the world. It contributes to the value of domestic and international dual circulation, and better fulfils the role of being a ‘super-connector’ and a ‘super-value-creator’ in terms of facilitating inward and outward investment,” Lee said.
Lee also said he had spoken with Shanghai Mayor Gong Zheng about discussing further opportunities for cooperation between the two cities.
He said five cooperation agreements and memoranda of understanding had been signed between the two governments, involving areas such as higher education, scientific research and talent training.
“Hong Kong and Shanghai are both important cities with unique characteristics and functions of the nation. The two cities will continue to deepen cooperation, aiming for mutual benefits and allowing both to achieve higher levels of development,” he said.
