Former American basketball star Stephon Marbury has applied for the Top Talent Pass Scheme and could work with one of Hong Kong's clubs to promote the sport in future.

The former NBA and CBA star, who retired in 2018, has applied for the scheme under Category A, in which applicants' annual income must have reached HK$2.5 million in the past year.

In a media sharing session organised by the Hong Kong Talent Engage office, which opened two weeks ago, Marbury said he may work with one of the basketball clubs in Hong Kong, but did not disclose a detailed plan.

"I wanted to be a part of the culture... The island fits for me, and I feel like I fit with the island or city as well," he said. "I hope that I can continue to help contribute to Hong Kong. I also feel what I've done in basketball can definitely help here in Hong Kong as well."

Director of the office Anthony Lau said Marbury will work with the government to promote the SAR's talent schemes. "He's just a living example to show to the world that Hong Kong is a place for talents around the world to develop and flourish here," Lau said.

"I think with this opportunity, I'm going to open up the minds and eyes to so many people who probably wanted to come to Hong Kong, but didn't even know that this programme was available," Marbury said.

Lau said the government welcomes a variety of talent to come to the city, including sports stars who wish to pursue their dreams here.
