Financial Secretary Paul Chan on Wednesday said everyone wants Beijing and Washington to have open dialogue and work together to achieve global economic stability.

Chan, who’s attending the Apec summit in San Francisco, said he hopes upcoming talks between Presidents Xi Jinping and Joe Biden will be productive.

“It’s a good opportunity for the leaders of the two largest economies to have open dialogue, to have more exchange views, so as to push for better economic growth and development for the region, and in fact for the world. Because these two economies working together will bring about a lot of stability and opportunities for the others to share,” he told reporters.

Chan earlier attended the Finance Minister's Meeting to discuss views about next year’s economic outlook, where he told entrepreneurs from around the world about opportunities in the SAR.

The finance chief said many business leaders he met on the trip – mostly from the artificial intelligence, biotech and fintech sectors – were thrilled to hear what Hong Kong can offer.

”Many of them are excited about Hong Kong's initiative in this area, in particular our Office for Attracting Strategic Enterprises and our Hong Kong Investment Corporation, which in suitable cases can also co-invest with them," he said.

"So overall, the response has been very favourable. I'm optimistic Hong Kong remains a very attractive destination for them to use as a platform and gateway to explore mainland and Asia market opportunities.”
