Lawmakers on Wednesday approved changes to an ordinance relating to Hong Kong's regional flag and emblem to combat public and intentional desecration both on the internet and in real life.
Amendments to the Regional Flag and Regional Emblem Ordinance clarify offences under the legislation. They also align the ordinance with the national anthem law.
Constitutional and mainland affairs minister, Erick Tsang, said the regional flag and emblem are important means for the public to "express their love and support" for the country and the SAR.
"With the regional flag and the regional anthem being used by the public more often, there is all the more reason for us to ensure that [the] important symbol and sign are suitably protected to preserve their dignity," Tsang said.
The amended ordinance sets out requirements on the use, recovery and disposal of the regional flag and emblem, as well as their inclusion in primary and secondary education.
