The Hong Kong Toilet Association on Friday described two public toilets in Western District as being “atrocious”, saying they’re in need of urgent repairs and cleaning, or even rebuilding.

The group invited members of the public to rate around 300 public toilets around the city, with its own members also conducting spot-checks on some of them.

Henry Hung, a founding member of the association, said the worst performers are the toilets on Catchick Street and Sai Ying Pun Market.

Hung pointed out that these toilets were extremely dirty and wet, and the installations such as taps and hand dryers had all gone rusty and were falling apart.

“Even if a person has an urgent need to go to the toilet, he or she is very likely going to give these toilets a miss and hold it for a little longer,” he said. "Basically they're all clogged."

"They need to demolish everything, and then rebuild another one… but still, it is very important on how to manage it after installation and after renewal.”

Hong Kong’s best toilet, meanwhile, is in Pak Shek Kok near Science Park.

Hung said the toilet, which has a glass ceiling to allow for the penetration of natural light, is nicely designed, very clean, and cozy – so much so that some netizens had described it as being on par with beautiful public toilets in Japan.

"This toilet is amazing. It is a very good toilet. Besides complying with our CASH (comfort, accessibility, safety, hygiene) concept, it also included a lot of IT stuff there," he said.

"Everything is mostly touchless, automatic. So these are the very good installations in the toilet."

Coming in second and third are toilets on the Ma Liu Shui Waterfront and on Hoi Ning Street in Sai Wan Ho.
