The deputy chief secretary Warner Cheuk on Saturday revealed that Xia Baolong, who leads the Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office, had expressed concern about the city’s district council elections.

Xia met with Cheuk and two other deputy secretaries, Michael Wong and Horace Cheung for the first time on Thursday in Shenzhen.

As Cheuk recalled on a radio programme, Xia “cared a lot about Hong Kong,” and acknowledged the efforts of the deputies, making them feel encouraged.

The upcoming district council elections was one of the topics Xia drew attention to, and Cheuk said the government has “spared no effort” on an “unprecedented” promotion campaign for them.

“We have produced a lot of promotional videos. In any recent speeches made by the secretaries and officials, we urged eligible voters to vote on December 10,” Cheuk said.

The Chief Secretary Eric Chan had also sent letters urging all civil servants to vote, and Cheuk said public servants have the duty to vote.

“Civil servants should act as role models. You work for the government. When the government implements crucial policies and measures, don't you have to support them?” he said.
