Constitutional affairs minister Erick Tsang said an online registration system has been launched on Monday for Hongkongers living on the mainland to return to the SAR to vote.
Those who wish to cast a ballot can vote in one of two designated schools in Sheung Shui, but they must sign up beforehand. The registration period runs until December 5.
Speaking at a Legislative Council panel meeting, Tsang said the system has been running smoothly so far, and that authorities have been promoting next month’s polls via mainland social media.
The constitutional affairs chief also said officials are actively considering whether to give voters a badge after casting a ballot on December 10.
The idea to give souvenir cards or badges to voters was proposed by several lawmakers, including election committee councillor Carmen Kan.
Tsang said he’s open to the suggestion as the government is committed to boosting voter participation.
"Some people say this is to lure voters to vote. No, this is not our thinking - rather, it's just a gesture of goodwill," he said.
"We are thinking how we can thank voters for casting a vote."
