Constitutional and Mainland Affairs Secretary Erick Tsang on Friday said a special task force is working to tackle misinformation about the district council election this Sunday.
Tsang told an RTHK programme that the team, formed by members of his bureau, the Registration and Electoral Office and the Information Services Department, is monitoring information about the polls and is ready to make instant clarifications.
"We will pay special attention to false information, rumours, smear attacks or soft resistance. If necessary, we will immediately clarify and refute rumours. We will also refer illegal cases to law enforcement agencies," he said.
The minister also urged members of the public not to over-interpret the government's move to hand out thank you cards to those who vote.
"This card itself is not very valuable, but it represents our sincerity. It's like giving Christmas and New Year cards to express our gratitude, so there's no need to over-interpret it," he said.
Tsang added that around 13,000 people have registered to vote at polling stations near the border, adding that he believes some Hongkongers on the mainland will go back to their districts to vote.
