The booming e-commerce sector in Thailand can offer new business opportunities for companies in the SAR and the mainland, the Consul-General of Thailand in Hong Kong said on Friday.

Speaking at a Belt and Road Office forum, Chaturont Chaiyakam described the latest launch of the Faster Payment System (FPS) x PromptPay Link for cross-border QR payment between Hong Kong and Thailand as a milestone for development.

He said Bangkok will seek to work closely with Hong Kong and the mainland on areas like e-commerce.

“E-commerce is one of the fastest growing industries in Thailand,” Chaiyakam said, adding that there’s strong demand from its 36 million users.

Separately, Patrick Yu, a vice president at delivery firm Lalamove, noted that there’s “huge potential” in the logistics industry in southeast Asian countries, as more small and medium sized enterprises switched or expanded their operations online.

“The online behaviour there has been growing and continues to grow. Anyone can tap into the markets,” he said.
