Secretary for Constitutional and Mainland Affairs Erick Tsang said on Saturday that there was no specific target for the district council elections, but the government wanted to educate the public about the importance of the polls and encourage them to vote.

To drum up support for Sunday's district council elections, carnivals are being organised in several districts, including Wan Chai, Kwun Tong and Kai Tak.

Speaking on a television programme, Tsang said the central government was primarily concerned with the SAR's overall performance.

"There is not a fixed target, but the central government is concerned about our work. So far, the central government has seen our efforts in all aspects. The most important thing is how we work hard, and ultimately how we implement policies benefiting Hong Kong people, making their lives better. This is what the central government cares most about," he said.

The "District Council Election Fun Day" aims to raise public awareness and encourage people to vote in the polls.

Admission to exhibitions at a number of museums and the Hong Kong Wetland Park will be free. There will also be special offers to visit historical buildings and monuments. The day will conclude with a gala in the evening at the West Kowloon Cultural District.
