The liaison office in Hong Kong has hailed Sunday’s district council elections as equal, fair and open, adding that there was wide participation in the polls.

In a statement issued on Monday, the office said the elections "fulfilled the last mile" in implementing the principle of patriots governing Hong Kong, adding that the revamped electoral mechanism has proven to be a good system.

“This election has once demonstrated healthy competition, while effectively promoting Hong Kong out of the politicised and ‘black election’ culture,” the statement read.

In Beijing, the Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office (HKMAO) also congratulated the SAR government on the election success.

The election is another important milestone in increasing the level of local governance and will serve to inject strong momentum into local governance, improve public services and further consolidate the foundation of governance and social development, the HKMAO said in a statement.
