The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) has dismissed one of its vice-presidents, Eric Ng, with immediate effect.

Announcing the decision on Wednesday, chairman of the university's council John Chai said the body had lost confidence in Ng following his recent actions.

"Having regards to the concern on the behaviour and actions of the university secretary, Eric Ng, in relation to matters pertinent to the work of the council in the past months, the council no longer has confidence in Ng's ability or willingness to support the work of the council, in a way that is expected of a senior officer in that position, in line with good governance principles," Chai said.

Chai said the council voted to terminate Ng's contract with the university "in the interest of ensuring efficient and effective functioning of the council of the university".

Ng, also the university secretary, was earlier accused of failing to stay neutral by signing a petition against a plan to reform the university's governing body. He was also criticised for bypassing the council's chairman to set a meeting agenda.

But Chai refused to reveal what behaviour was discussed in the meeting and the exact reason for Ng's sacking.

In a statement, Ng expressed his shock and regret over the decision, adding that he had "always performed his duties with professionalism and loyalty in accordance with the university's regulations and procedures".

Ng said he was notified in October that a group would be set up to investigate him, but was never invited to provide information or participate in the investigation in the past two months.

He added that he reserved the right to take legal action against the accusations.

The university's provost, Alan Chan, will take up Ng's duty as vice-president in administration until a successor is appointed. The deputy university secretary, Amelia Wong, will serve as secretary until the end of 2024.

Education minister Christine Choi said her bureau respects the council's decision and supports the university in enhancing governance in accordance with its mechanism.

She also noted that the university has autonomy over its finances, personnel, and systems.

Joining the university in 2007, Ng was appointed registrar a year later and took up the post as university secretary in 2011. He also became one of the institution's vice-presidents in 2017.

During his tenure, Ng was responsible for coordinating professional and administrative services, overseeing a number of administrative units, as well as handling communication matters and external relationships.
