Secretary for Home and Youth Affairs Alice Mak on Sunday said the district council election has achieved its goal of electing patriots committed to serving the community.

Speaking on a TV programme, Mak said the councillors have demonstrated their patriotism and passion for district affairs.

"Our ultimate goal is to elect a group of dedicated patriots who are passionate about serving our districts and to have them join the district councils through this election. We believe that the 470 district councillors-elect are patriots who are committed to serving the districts. In this respect, we have achieved our goal."

Mak said people showed their support for the revamped polls with a turnout of more than one million last Sunday.

The home affairs chief also said people can seek help not only from councillors in their own districts in future, but also those elected from district committees constituencies and appointed by the government carrying out their duties without geographical boundary.

She added that the authorities will soon introduce guidelines to monitor councillors' performance and to ensure they assist the government in collecting residents' opinions.
