Police on Wednesday said a man died and six people were injured in a fire at Tung Tau Estate in Wong Tai Sin.
The incident took place at Kwai Tung House at 7.19am. First responders rushed to the scene and put out the blaze in about half an hour.
During a media briefing, the acting chief inspector of operations for the Wong Tai Sin police district, Kwok Chung-hei, said a man was found dead in the affected unit and they are still identifying him.
Police suspect that a man used a knife to injure two women: a 49-year-old and her daughter, 16, in the flat, Kwok said. He explained that the 49-year-old and her two daughters escaped from the unit before the fire broke out.
He said a family dispute is believed to be the cause of the incident.
"Police will conduct an investigation to determine the cause of the fire and how the injuries were sustained. It is important to note that this is an isolated incident, likely resulting from a family dispute." he added.
The woman and her two daughters, one of whom was not injured, were later sent to Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
He also said four other people felt unwell from smoke inhalation.
Thirty people were evacuated during the blaze, and two jets and a breathing apparatus team were deployed to put out the fire.
