The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) said it will cull around 2,800 pigs at a farm in Yuen Long next week to curb the spread of the African Swine Fever (ASF) virus.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the AFCD said at least four pigs from a licensed pig farm in Lau Fau San were found to be infected with the ASF virus.
It said officials have immediately stopped the movement of pigs out of the farm, and they have inspected two other nearby pig farms and collected samples for testing.
"AFCD staff are conducting visits to all local licensed pig farms to ensure biosecurity measures have been properly implemented; and continued close surveillance to detect pigs with abnormalities and if a farm is infected as early as possible," a spokesperson added.
The department said the latest incident does not affect the operation of local slaughterhouses or the overall supply of live pigs in the territory.
