Two Hongkongers who were injured in a traffic accident in northern Guangdong suffered serious injuries to their bones and organs but are in stable condition, according to a doctor at a Shaoguan hospital which is treating the victims.

On Christmas day, a Hong Kong resident died and two others were hurt in Shaoguan city, after the car they were in reportedly crossed into the wrong lane and collided with another vehicle.

The SAR government said in a statement that all three were passengers in a private car with a mainland licence plate.

The two injured Hongkongers – a male and a female – are now in intensive care at Yuebei People's Hospital in Shaoguan.

"Although the vital signs of the two patients are relatively stable, their injuries are still serious. The female patient has multiple bone fractures in addition to issues with the chest and abdominal cavity. Both patients are currently conscious," said a doctor surnamed Yin at the hospital.

"They are suffering from multiple complicated and serious injuries. We will continue to monitor their condition and provide them with good medical care."

RTHK has learned that the crash occurred on a two-way road with sharp curves and slopes in Lechang, a county-level city bordering Hunan province.

An experienced mainland driver told RTHK that motorists have to exercise caution when driving on that particular section of the road.

"This road is dangerous because it has many sharp curves and is narrow. Drivers often go fast and overtake others on this road. So make sure to slow down and be careful," he said.
