The Secretary for Home and Youth Affairs on Saturday brushed aside suggestions that ideas floated by district councils to drive the local economy are somewhat similar and could lead to an overlap of resources.

Alice Mak made the remarks on a radio programme after the councils proposed measures such as night markets and create Instagram-worthy spots to boost consumption and lure more visitors.

"When you look at the list of the activities, some of them are already some well-established or have a very long history, like a traditional dragon dance during the Tin Hau Festival, or traditional ceremonies during certain festivals. So, the timing will be quite similar, but this will not hinder the participation from the community," she told reporters.

Under a new monitoring mechanism, councillors are required to meet certain targets, such a certain number of meetings and outreach visits.

Asked whether the government will be easier on appointed district council members who have other jobs, Mak went on to say that every councillor has to fulfill their duties.

"They shouldn't only be honorary councillors, but actual councillors who perform real work. They should not compromise or do less in district work just because they have another job. This would be unfair to other district councillors and residents," she said.
