Secretary for Innovation, Technology and Industry Sun Dong said on Sunday that Hong Kong must strengthen cooperation with the mainland and make use of its own unique advantages to develop the city's innovation and technology industries.
Speaking on a radio programme, Sun admitted that sanctions imposed by some countries on China had created additional challenges in attracting companies to Hong Kong.
Despite these obstacles, Sun said Hong Kong should continue to expand its global connections and strengthen its ties with the mainland.
"I believe we should rely more on our nation during this period, as our country is highly committed to advancing innovation and technology in Hong Kong," he said.
"With the backing of our country and leveraging our unique strengths, we can overcome these obstacles and forge ahead on our path towards high-quality innovation and technological development, tailored to the characteristics of Hong Kong."
Sun also said it was a challenge to achieve the government's goal of attracting 100 of the world's leading innovation and technology companies to Hong Kong within five years.
He noted that while nearly 40 companies have already set up in the SAR or are about to do so, some of them face problems such as a shortage of manpower and insufficient land supply.
Sun said various government departments should work together to support the establishment of these companies in Hong Kong and to build an innovation and technology industry ecosystem.
