Secretary for Transport and Logistics Lam Sai-hung said on Monday that he was very concerned about Cathay Pacific's decision to cancel some flights in January and February, and urged the airline to minimise the impact on passengers.

The flagship carrier announced on Sunday that it would reduce flights on non-peak days over the next two months to ensure normal operations during the upcoming Lunar New Year holiday.

In a Facebook post, Lam said he had raised his concerns with the airline's management, adding that it's important for Hong Kong as an international aviation hub to provide high-quality and stable services.

"Hong Kong's aviation sector is on its way to full recovery, so airlines should enhance their capacity to cope with the surge in demand, manage flight schedules and staffing levels," he added.

He said Cathay should quickly explain to affected passengers what follow-up action would be taken, such as arranging alternative flights.

He said the Civil Aviation Department would closely monitor Cathay's actions.

Cathay came under fire last month for cancelling flights over the Christmas period, when it said more pilots than expected had called in sick.
