The MTR Corporation on Sunday announced that it has restored a giant Chinese calligraphy mural by the late "King of Kowloon".

Located in Prince Edward, it is the largest of the artist’s three known works that are preserved at their original sites.

A small portion of the mural was discovered on a railway bridge barrier near Mong Kok East Station in 2022 after some paint peeled off.

Since then, the railway operator said it was able to double the size of the inscription – which features bold, black characters – after careful excavation and restoration works.

The MTR added that it applied professional protective materials to the mural’s surface to protect the work which is 1.5 metres tall and five metres wide.

The two other works by the self-proclaimed “King of Kowloon”, Tsang Tsou-choi, can be found on a column at the Tsim Sha Tsui Star Ferry Terminal and a lamp post in Ping Shek Estate.

Born in 1921, Tsang left numerous, bold, brush-written calligraphy works all over the territory, including on electrical boxes, doors and walls. The inscriptions usually included biographical information, such as details of his family history. He passed away in 2007.

Tsang’s works were once exhibited at the Venice Biennale in 2003. They are currently part of the M+ Museum collection.
