Financial Secretary Paul Chan on Saturday said global political and business leaders he met during a high-profile summit in Switzerland were mostly interested in opportunities both Hong Kong and the mainland had to offer.

Returning from attending the World Economic Forum in Davos, he said the SAR's plan to implement its own security legislation this year was not mentioned often in the discussions.

"They had the most interest in the opportunities on the mainland and in Hong Kong, because in their global investment layout, China and Asia, which is developing, are their focus. And in this process, Hong Kong plays a very important role," Chan told reporters.

"We have also discussed the implementation of One Country, Two Systems in Hong Kong, so that everyone is reassured and understands that One Country, Two Systems will be maintained and implemented for a long time."

Chan also said he'd met leaders from the Middle East and countries connected to the nation's Belt and Road initiative to pave the way for future investment.

On suggestions by the New People's Party to invest part of Hong Kong's Exchange Fund in local stocks, Chan said authorities would cautiously handle risks in the financial market. The Exchange Fund is the investment fund maintained by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority to back the Hong Kong dollar.
