Chief Executive John Lee says he hopes a series of mega-events to be held in Hong Kong this year will draw in tourists – and their dollars.

But, addressing legislators in a question-and-answer session on Thursday, he also acknowledged that in the face of geopolitical tensions, the local economy will inevitably be affected by the external environment in the short term.

Asked if the government can do its part to draw in big name stars such as Taylor Swift and Beyoncé to give the tourism, retail and catering sectors a shot in the arm, Lee said while it’s a good idea, it may be easier said than done.

"It's just like setting up a date with someone. You can call them and try to arrange something, but they have to be available, and a trip to Hong Kong needs to work for that person's schedule," he said.

Lee said business leaders, artists and athletes are already coming to Hong Kong to take part in mega events and a lot of them are opinion leaders and influencers who publicise the SAR's "vibrant life".

There were also some sparks during the discussion, with lawmaker Paul Tse suggesting at one point that locals may not be inclined to participate in mega events here as the government appears in the eyes of some to be catering to the needs of mainlanders, while targeting tax-paying locals with crackdowns on things from jaywalking to unlicensed catering businesses.

Lee replied that Hong Kong is facing many challenges, with the economy and stock markets suffering, and this is affecting people's moods.

He said pessimism is not the answer, and people should speak out against "negative vibes".

“Quarrels between different places shouldn’t be provoked,” Lee said. “I hope everyone works together to prevent small problems from ballooning into bigger ones, and if there isn’t any problem, one shouldn’t be made up.”

“If we don’t work in harmony, even under ‘patriots ruling Hong Kong’, and spread what I consider to be non-positive messages that don’t even conform to reality, this is dangerous, and it shouldn’t happen,” he warned.

Lee urged people to embrace the influx of visitors expected during big events, like the visit of footballer Lionel Messi and the annual Art Basel fair.

"We do have a series of events promoted. They may at the same time create minor problems, but it should not stop us from doing the right thing," he said.
