Director of Broadcasting Eddie Cheung said on Tuesday that RTHK is committed to safeguarding consumer rights.

During an award ceremony for the top ten news stories related to consumer rights in the past year, Cheung said the public broadcaster is collaborating with the Securities and Futures Commission to step up promotion against fraud and protect residents from falling victim to scams.

"We will keep working hard because Hong Kong is a hub for mega events and it's a nice destination for tourism and retail. We surely need to maintain the good reputation of Hong Kong, so we must continue to work hard," he said.

Cheung made the remark after a poll conducted by the Consumer Council found stories related to the alleged fraud scandal surrounding crypto exchange platform JPEX to be the top consumer news last year.

Meanwhile, the council’s chairman, Clement Chan, said there’s been a surge in fraud cases last year following the pandemic.

"With the rise in consumption activities, the occurrence of fraud cases has also surged. The increasing popularity of online shopping has resulted in numerous residents falling prey to online shopping scams,” he added.
