Hong Kong Disneyland has apologised after 12 people needed to be rescued by firefighters on Wednesday because a rollercoaster at the theme park came to a halt mid-ride.

Police said they received a report at about 3pm that the ride in the Hyperspace Mountain section of the theme park had come to a standstill due to an emergency stop.

Firefighters rescued a dozen trapped passengers after around 50 minutes. Nobody was injured.

The Electrical and Mechanical Services Department said in a statement that it has requested the theme park to submit a report on the incident after it conducts its review.

“The preliminary finding revealed that nine trains of roller coasters were in service at the material time. Due to delays in the loading and unloading area, the safety system activated and stopped all trains on the track to prevent other trains from entering the loading and unloading area,” the department said.

It also asked the theme park to ensure the attraction’s safety before it reopens.

Hong Kong Disneyland has apologised to the affected passengers and stressed that it “highly values the safety of all visitors and staff.”

It said it has suspended relevant facilities to conduct a thorough review.
