Crowds of Hongkongers and tourists gathered around Victoria Harbour on the second day of the Lunar New Year for the return of the traditional fireworks display, which has been missing for four long years because of the pandemic.

The spectacular show featured eight segments, opening with a scene entitled "The Year of the Dragon".

The focus then moved on to the lucky number eight, which symbolises wealth and abundance.

For the final scene, "Harvest Drums", Chinese gold ingots were the centrepiece, bringing a wish for prosperity and peace in Hong Kong.

The display began at 8 pm and lasted 23 minutes. It was coordinated by the Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau and cost an estimated HK$13 million.

Police say more than 338,000 people watched the display.
