DAB lawmakers on Monday said Hong Kong should work with other cities in the Greater Bay Area to overcome its problems in disposing of waste, adding that the SAR lacks the space and capacity for large-scale recycling.

The proposal is one of several the party is putting forward ahead of the annual meetings of the nation's legislature and top political advisory body in Beijing next month.

Starry Lee, Hong Kong's sole member of the National People's Congress Standing Committtee, said the territory should work with cities such as Zhuhai and Jiangmen to develop incinerators and other facilities.

"We also noted that other cities in the Greater Bay Area will have more land and capacity for all these recycling businesses. In Hong Kong, even though you recycle a car, a ship, or even a paper, sometimes it's really difficult to get a place to handle the further process. Then we should really make use of different cities' strengths and characteristics to build a circle together," she told reporters.

Meanwhile, the party also suggested streamlining and speeding up the process for mainland enterprises to list in Hong Kong, saying this would strengthen the SAR's status as an international financial centre.

"When some of our mega mainland enterprises were listed in the US, due to geopolitical reasons, the US government sanctioned these listed companies, so they need to be delisted,” said DAB lawmaker Rock Chen, who’s a member of the National People's Congress.

“If Hong Kong is able to serve as an alternative platform for mainland enterprises to be listed, then we are in control of our own destiny. We don't need to rely solely on overseas markets.”

Other proposals include exploring further joint customs clearance with the mainland and opening more border checkpoints around the clock.
