The government on Wednesday announced a new programme to inspect and repair hundreds of buildings, following a spate of incidents last year in which concrete fell from dilapidated blocks.
The Development Bureau said it plans to inspect 360 buildings a year, with the aim of completing two-thirds of the inspections and any emergency repairs before the rainy season, which usually starts in July.
A spokeswoman said an increase in rainfall last year may have contributed to the rise in accidents involving falling concrete.
She said building owners will be required to repay the government for any repairs carried out, and they could face legal action if they fail to do so.
Drones will be used to inspect the buildings to save time, the spokeswoman added.
The Buildings Department already selects 600 old blocks each year and issues statutory notices to owners, requiring them to arrange their own inspections and repairs.
