Another cold spell is set to descend on Hong Kong from Thursday night, the observatory has warned.

The mercury was topping 20 degrees Celsius in some areas of the city during the day, but was set to fall overnight to as low as 15 degrees in urban areas – and even lower than that in parts of the New Territories.

By Saturday morning, built-up areas could be as cold as 12 degrees, with New Territories residents shivering in even chillier conditions, forecasters said.

The observatory issued the cold weather warning at 4.20pm on Thursday.

"Members of the public should be aware of the change in weather, keep warm, put on warm clothes and take care of the elderlies and persons with chronic medical conditions," the observatory said.

The cold snap is expected to be rather short-lived, with temperatures expected to rise progressively early next week.
