Government investigators said on Thursday that they were testing about 35 kilograms of what's thought to be dog and cat meat after it was found being offered to consumers in a Mong Kok restaurant.

Officers from the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department and the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department joined police officers in what was described as a "joint blitz operation" at an outlet in Shanghai Street after a tip-off.

One man has been arrested on suspicion of running an unlicensed restaurant. Authorities said a prosecution would be instituted if tests find that the seized meat was in fact the flesh of dogs and cats.

Under the Dogs and Cats Regulations, anyone slaughtering a dog or cat for use as food or selling it attracts a fine of up to HK$5,000 and a maximum of six months' imprisonment.
